DIY Homemade Coconut Oil Epsom Salt Scrub

Coconut Oil Salt Scrub DIYWhile away from home, for business or pleasure, do you feel the need to shell out dough for trinkets?  Perhaps a little something-something to remember your relaxing sandy white beach days away from home? Or perhaps a city-themed snow globe for the little one who wasn’t able to tag along on your business trip?

We all do it. It starts out harmless enough, a coffee cup here or a shot glass there.  Before you know it, the living room shelves are packed full of little items that we don’t remember purchasing.  I have to wonder if there isn’t a better way to remember our carefree days at the cabin or our urban exploration trip to Seattle. One that doesn’t include purchasing an ill-fitted t-shirt in a color we won’t wear outside of our home upon our return.

DIY Homemade Body Salt ScrubRather than spending money on my trip, I try to find ways to incorporate elements of my trip upon my return. Earlier this year, the hubby and I traveled to Kona, Hawaii to meet up with his parents while they were on their own vaca.

As a memento of our trip, I purchased a bar of soap, locally made that smelt of coconut and lime. Long after we had slipped back into our daily work routines, my morning shower would transcend time and space to deposit me on the island . . . if only for a few moments.

DIY Coconut Body ScrubOur travels often take us to a new environment that has all new fresh scents. Think of the beautiful flowers in Hawaii or the aromatic qualities of the forest during your camping trip. Often times, these scents are captured in locally made soaps, lotions or even sugar scrubs that can be used at home. Every time you take a shower, you will be whisked away to your fav vaca spot.

So, while my bar of soap is long gone, I have found that a sugar or salt scrub can turn washing my hands into a brief vacation.  In addition, the scrub is easily made with relatively cheap items or those from around the house.

SCRUB BASICS

THE BASE
The base of scrubs typically fall into three categories: sugar, salt or Epsom salt. It really is a preference. Sugar is a bit softer with sea salt (or kosher) being a bit harsher on the skin. I use Epsom salt. There are web sites and organizations dedicated touting its benefits and I figured it won’t hurt.

When picking the oil, again this comes down to preference. There is grapeseed, coconut and even olive oil. Everyone has an opinion on this. The only thing I have found across the board is that baby oil isn’t a wise choice. I use grapeseed and coconut. No reason. Just dig them.

THE SCENTS
Essential oils is what gives your scrub its scent. It can come from pure oils like Lavender or Lemon or you can use a blend of oils or a blended oil from the store of your choice.  A simple search in Google for Essential Oils will reveal a host of suppliers. I use Escents Aromatherapy for its located in my home province of British Columbia — which means I’m not shelling out a whole lot for shipping.

DIY HAND/BODY SCRUB

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt (use a bit more for a courser sand-like texture)
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (I don’t recommend heating the oil. Leave it solid)
  • 10-15 drops of essential oils

Directions:

Mix the three ingredients well. Make sure all the oil is blended with the salt. Store in an air-tight container. That’s it.
